Glad you can finally dig in and find something that works! If you have any trouble or questions with the set up, shoot me a message as I just went through all the semantics of it. Seems like all “newsletter” type systems use a “confirmation e-mail” to confirm via a clicked link, and then a secondary “welcome e-mail” to inform to user they have been added. The two big ones I've used Aweber and Mailchimp definitely do!

Thank you for mentioning Mailchimp here. I had a look at it a few days ago after seeing the opt-in form on another blog, but was still a little wary to sign up for their services.

Since I started my Wordpress blog in June 2009 I had two autoresponders (one was a Wordpress plugin) installed, but for one reason or another they did not work.The second one only send out the confirmation and thank you e-mails and nothing after that although I had a ten part newsletter added to it.

I have been looking for something that I can use as I actually have a few subscribers (that of course have received no newsletters during the past few weeks, bad for business...).

I am definitely going to try Mailchimp now and hope that it will work for me.

Great distinction between the two Rob.

I hadn't really thought about the two paradigms involved here.. its easy to just see it all as part of the big system that you create to keep people connected to you.. but the purposes are very different!

Awesome! Check out these freebie and much better icon's to swap out what the plugin uses as their color defaults…much sharper in my opinion…I always need to modify everything, something's wrong with me.

addthis.com is a great tool, I'm using addtoany on this site, I forget the differences.

Those tools are great for allowing others to bookmark you, but the subscribe options plugin is a little different and in my opinion more important. I'm sure you already know! but subscribe options make it obvious for people to connect with your content regularly, go check out your other avenues like facebook or twitter...they draw people in so you can keep them and dish out value to them easily...the add and sharing type stuff allows others to push out your content, resend it, bookmark and such...a little but important difference!

Basically like an old PR firm who you used to have to pay to get a report of if your company was mentioned in any media outlets, Google does the legwork for you, for free, and will report back either as it happens, in a daily digest, or even with an RSS feed for the feedfreaks (like me).

Thanks for the plugs for the tools, Rob. RescueTime looks like a solid suggestion for creating time management accountability for yourself.

I'll second using Meetup for business networking. Even if some of the meetings won't necessarily result in sales, you can learn a huge amount from serial conversations with different categories of people about business.

Face to face cuts through all the crap of e-mail. When you're speaking with someone, you're the focus of their attention. Furthermore, there are still a lot of people with money who don't use the internet as intensively as a typical blogger. The best way to get access to them (and their money) is by meeting them in person.

I haven't yet given any talks at colleges, but I've found from a couple people who have that the most efficient avenue is through the career center.

I've used http://www.addthis.com to great effect on some websites lately – they have great customization and have a killer analytics panel that really shows how people are using the options. Oh and free

Your comment about creating a little outline presentation that shows benefits, etc is a great idea. Hadn't thought about doing anything other than writing.
