Like anything else balance is key, seek feedback from a range of people. Sometimes it's tempting to go after strictly the feedback you anticipate to be positive - whether it's intentional or not, especially when seeking feedback on something in which you are emotionally invested such as your business.

Heh, great point John...mom's always going to give you the thumbs up even if you're going no where fast. Allowing family to validate your content may not be the best idea, but there's no reason to call on their social media reach.

I really enjoyed your comparison of how other people have achieved success - Definitely an interesting trend of individuals creating value by producing something they love and sharing it with others and then resulting in profit and success.

Concerning showing ideas to family and friends first - I do question this strategy. I believe that sometimes family and friends are too close to you and therefore cannot see objectively. For example, your parents may absolutely love your idea based on their feelings for you, yet the idea may flop in the marketplace.

Thanks Patrick! Really glad to hear that as I'm making it all happen. Loving what I'm doing has made all the difference. Reflecting on it is something I need to pick up. New posts coming! Glad to see you here, hope to see you again.

Having started multiple online ventures, I can directly attribute the success and failure of each to just how fired up I was about the actual subject matter. Wanting to make money isn't enough to start something...starting something is important so you can learn how you do it right (not how everyone else tells you). Once you have that skill set, then you can do other things with slightly less personal passion / for money....but it has to start somewhere. Great post!

It's a valid worry, but the methods for engaging users on a blog, building traffic, sustaining interest and monetizing are all ways to differentiate, the internet is just too powerful. You may want to blog about permaculture, but your variations...how often you blog, that your site looks better than others, that your site caters to young people who still want to use a computer but be enviro friendly, all that specificity will still leave a large crowd for you to be part of, be a leader in, and grow from.

I think you're right here. I've tried a few SEO based businesses for a few years with some success, though very low and failure more often. The one thing that worries me is the blogging seems so pervasive now, there's a whole ocean of blogs out there so I feel as though you need to differentiate yourself somehow.

Absolutely. Agreed. Caring about what you're doing is the backbone of putting in hard work, constant content, and the tactics for monetizing. I think passion, or being able to enjoy what your endeavor is rooted in (ie. helping people, music, technology, networking, etc) is what needs to be constant, otherwise all those other things lose their flavor, don't lose that enjoyment! Great point Moon, thanks for swinging by.
