First it appeared to add legitimacy to the business and people began to perceive it as real, even if in the beginning it was just a set of documents. Also, I found it helpful for organizing myself and building a team. Once I had a formal business I had something to build value into with an established foundation that was separate from myself. Finally, when it came time to add members to the team they seemed to take it more seriously since I had taken formal steps. Not sure if these items would add as much value when building a lifestyle business, however it's worth considering.
